I love books. I love to buy, borrow, discuss, recommend, and occasionally lend them. I read them daily, and I’ve written two of my own. So when in 2015 I was invited to join the board of the West Coast Book Prize Society, the nonprofit behind what was then the BC Book Prizes, I said a fast yes.
For five years, I dove into book culture in a whole new way. It was immensely satisfying to be on the team of volunteers (and book lovers) that updated the society’s bylaws, added Yukon to the prize name, spread programming throughout the year, and launched two new prizes.
Though I’m no longer on the board, I still believe the prizes are an essential—and joyful—way to support and spotlight local authors. So I’ve stayed a member of the society. For just $25 a year, I can vote at the AGM, get discounted gala tickets, and continue to be plugged into the BC and Yukon book scene. I also became a monthly donor. Donating just $20 a month entitles you to a free shortlisted title per year. Was I seduced by that offer? Well…I love books as much as ever. So maybe a little.
