On Wednesday, April 14, join the Vancouver Writers Fest and the Vancouver Public Library in partnership with the BC and Yukon Book Prizes as we celebrate the finalists for the 2021 Jim Deva Prize for Writing That Provokes.

Supported by a generous donation by Bruce Smyth to honour his late partner, Jim Deva, this prize is awarded to the author or illustrator of an original work of published writing that challenges or provokes the ideas and forces that shape what writing, art, or society can become. Now in its second year, books shortlisted for this prize will demonstrate a vitality and urgency that breaks boundaries and blazes new paths within their genre that others may follow.

This event will feature the finalists of the prize reading from their books and will be hosted by Megan Cole, Director of Programming and Communications for the BC and Yukon Book Prizes, as well as host and producer for its Writing the Coast podcast. The finalists are Joel Bakan (The New Corporation: How “Good” Corporations Are Bad for Democracy, Allen Lane Canada), Billy-Ray Belcourt (A History of My Brief Body, Hamish Hamilton Canada), Amber Dawn (My Art Is Killing Me and Other Poems, Arsenal Pulp Press), Michelle Good (Five Little Indians, HarperCollins) and Benjamin Perrin (Overdose: Heartbreak and Hope in Canada’s Opioid Crisis, Viking Canada).

Incite is a free series and is presented in partnership with the Vancouver Public Library.

This event is also available through the TELUS Optik network.
